I believe Rome was too somewhat moving away from alavery before the invasion of a certain "most mischievous superstition" in the words of Cornelius Tacitus. IMHO the "dark ages" began in the 4th century with Constantine and period of the gothic cathedrals is really the beginning of the Renaissance.
