The trail option is not all that difficult. The USFS & Idaho did a great job converting The Milwaukee Road line thru the Bitterroot Mtns into the Hiawatha Trail for biking & hiking. The line features 10 tunnels ( longest @ 1.7 miles ) & 7 steel viaducts ( tallest @ 200 ft.), and is 15 miles long. The folks @ Lookout Pass Ski Area do a great job of maintaining the trail for the safety of all. Hopefully the POTB will remain active, but The Hiawatha Trail would be an excellent example of how to do a trail right.
