It was determined in 1980 that the Van Buren Bridge was no longer operable. In steamboat days Corvallis was considered the head of navigation on the Willamette except for Spring when boats could reach Eugene during high water flows. When you cross the river on 99E just south of Harrisburg you will see rapids during the summer.
