Al Perlman was prez of New York Central from 1954 until the Penn Central merger in 1968. He was pushing for NYC to merge with either B&O or C&O, and PRR would merge with the other of those two. So, not exactly end-to-end mergers, but merging slightly different territories and commodities. When it finally came down to B&O-C&O and NYC-PRR, Perlman said, "They got the coal and we got the passengers."
