Wait a minute! The owners of Brightline, Fortress Investments, believe I will pay money to park in Victorville and more money to hope on a train to Las Vegas, when I can drive that distance (80-100 miles) rather easily? Oh come on!
Anyone who lives in the metroplex (Burbank to OC / the west side to the mountains) knows the hard part of the trek to sin city is before Cajon Pass. After the pass, the driving to Vegas is easy barring a traffic jam from an accident.
If the LA-SF brown mark is an indication, Brightline will be a financial black hole to the taxpayer money with little or nothing in return.
How much taxpayer money will actually go to this project when Fortress can't find private backers? Look at the cost revisions of the Brown Mark.
Why start at Victorville? Does Fortress, or anyone else, believe that this bullet train will be extended into the metroplex without opposition?
Anyone who lives in the metroplex, which this project is aimed at, knows that driving or flying from one the local airports, like LAX or Burbank, is relatively inexpensive.
What is the demographic (income, age, etc.) of the consumer that Fortress expects will use this train?
How about this. Use conventional trains running on existing tracks from an easily accessible station, or multiple stations, inside the metroplex. Forget LA Union Station, too many bums, too little parking and hard to get to.
Turn the trip, which will take longer than flying into a user friendly experience with tricked out passenger cars, entertainment and booze. Hell, even have a smoking car for the 420 crowd.
