According to the news release, the derailment happened first, with the bridge collapsing a few hours later.
Finally, just a small correction. The dirt road in the foreground is NOT the old E&P grade. The E&P crossed the SP on the other side of the river, almost right where the grade crossing is on the current road into the old townsite and just behind the yellow boxcar in Drew's photo. The E&P then circled around on the north bank to the left side of the photo before crossing the Humboldt. See the map on page 101 of Myrick's Railroad of Nevada & Eastern California- Volume 1 book, and the photo on the bottom of page 109.
