Early SW-1's were built with a D4D main generator and D27 traction motors as were the NW-2 and various others (NW-3, NW-5). In the SW-1 the 600 hp prime mover could not produce enough horsepower hence no blowers where the 1000 hp could. With the SW-8 came the D15C main generator which was also applied to later SW-1's. Our SW-1 built in 1952 has the D15C as does all of our SW-8's, SW-900 and Canadian build GMD1. Improvement in traction motor short-time ratings eliminates the need for the blowers in lower horsepower units although motors can still be damaged in extreme extended stall conditions. EMD's standardization makes the units particularly popular with shortlines.

Hot EWater please correct me if I erred in any of my observations!
