The marginal success of DMUs seems to be a mostly U.S. phenomenon.
They are very widely used in the U.K. and Europe, for example.
It's only is this country that we have curiousities like Caltrain
using transcontinental locomotives to haul three cars from San
Jose to San Francisco and stopping every few miles.
Also isn't the 2012 mandated PTC (Positive Train Control) going
to make all the "temporal separation" requirements totally obsolete?
