Scranton, once the 4th largest city by population in Pennslyvania, was once served by FIVE Class 1 railroads ( Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, Erie, New York, Ontario & Western, Central RR of New Jersey, and Delaware & Hudson ), an Interurban that served coal mines AND used both 3rd rail & overhead wire ( Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley ), and a fair - sized City Streetcar System. As well, Lackawanna Iron was one of the earliset U.S. producers of Iron railroad rail. Some of their rail could still be found on the Modesto & Empire Traction RR. in the 1980's.
