One other potential gotcha: depending on the depreciated (tax) value of the buildings (yes, they depreciate while the land appreciates), and the permit value of the generator, you might be require to add a water tank for fire protection (your RR-style would work if it's big enough and if it's on fireproof supports). If the permit value of the work is more than some percentage of the structure value, it triggers a requirement to bring the whole place up to code. If you've been living there for a long time in an old house, it's something to think about.

FWIW, most of the rural or suburban "This Old House" projects I've seen in New England include a generator, for times when storms knock all the wires down. One might wonder why the wires can all fall down in New England, along with many trees, and fires don't start. Hmmm - PG&E?
