This historical society webpage says "they were later shipped to Mexico on a long-term lease in 1978." Perhaps after the lease expired, the Mexican RR bought them?
The same webpage says restoration of the PA's and their use as a public relations tool was a pet project of a D&H president. But after he was gone, the PA's were unceremoniously sold to a broker. Brokers are one rung above scrappers. That's what made me wonder if there was ill will by the new executive.
