PCC cars have magnetic track brakes and San Francisco cable cars have manual track brakes. A cable car's pine block track brakes are leveraged enough that the gripman can lift the car off the wheels and slide the car down hill being dragged by the cable. Rather fragrant. The blocks have to be changed every few days.
