DENVER (AP) -- Officials say a freight train has derailed at Littleton, sending at least 17 cars off the tracks and spilling molten sulfur onto the ground. There are no reports of any injuries.
Littleton Police Lt. Mike Broadhead says the three-locomotive, 68-car train derailed around 11:37 p.m. Friday. The cause of the derailment has not been determined.
BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says the train originated in Bonneville, Wyo., and it appears sulfur spilled from fewer than five of the derailed cars.
Broadhead says the rotten-egg odor of sulfur can be smelled up to a quarter mile away. Firefighters have tackled several small fires that broke out in the spill.
Two light rail tracks in the area and one of these has been affected by the derailment and the other is being inspected.
