In simple terms, the cables communicate between the road locomotives so that when the engineer manipulates the throttle, dynamic brake, turns on the rear headlight, etc. the trailing locomotives respond accordingly. Trailing units can communicate issues such as overheating, ground relay, etc. Automatic and independent air brakes communicate via the air hoses that connect the locomotives.

Distributed power communicates by radio.
