He’s learning that life is about choices and trade offs.

Alternatives:

1) Spend time going to college. Get a girl friend. Experience a normal life. Make friends with intelligent productive people.

2) Spend time scraping rust on an depressing hulk of metal. Go into debt. Make friends with people who dropped out of school to be top ape at the choo-choo train club. Become a professional railfan.
