It is a very hot Monday morning, the 23rd of August, 1971. The turmoil in this country kept on going as the previous Saturday, Black Panther George Jackson and five others had been killed in an escape attempt at San Quentin. All that seemed very distant on the streets of Yakima as Yakima Valley Transportation GE #298 headed out Pine St. toward Congden Orchards with three reefers.
Later that day, #298 was switching the interchange with parent company Union Pacfic.
