In 1978 there were 9 forest product plants on the railroad. In addition to sawmills Prineville was also home to a number of millwork facilities that would bring in carloads of rough cut lumber from elsewhere, mostly northern California, that would be planed and/or finished and then shipped back out as a finished product to the final destination, all under “Milling-In-Transit” freight rates.
