NOT ONE CENT MORE, for light duty vehicle owners.... Until an "equivalent" and "only" "equivalent" "pay as you drive system" is developed and fully tested for the EV's.
A VMT use fee on EV's equvalent to, and "only equivalent" to the per mile rate paid through the current gasoline tax. EV's should pay the same rate as I do for my gasoline powered pickup truck... And, if I were to buy a new EV pickup truck, why should the rest of you pay for my road use?
And, how about a ton miles per axle "pay as you drive" tax on medium and heavy duty trucks? Paying a rate per miles more directly related to truck weight and axle loading, since these are the folks who really tear up the roads and bridges. They do pay more, and should be paying more as they are responsible in some studies for up to 93% of the pavement danage on the interstate system. I have no problem with paying for some of that commercial highway use through taxing Amazon's, or Bezo's income, for the roads Amazon uses to make money. But, the current truck fees do not cover those direct costs. And, from an economic stand point this system distorts costs, with even lightly loaded and/or less uses trucks, actually cross subsidizing trucks carrying heavier commodities doing more damage, within the trucking industry. And, of course this also distorts competitive cost advantages between RR's and trucking, favoring heavy commodities on these cross subsidized trucks, that are the "outliers" on an exponential scale of weights related road damage.
