Regarding the Great Northern sleeper,(although I would defer to Lee, who was apparently on this very train,) it was common for non - CZ cars to be placed at either the very headend, or the rear just ahead of the Dome - Obs. This was to allow the onboard PA System to function in as many cars as possible. The trial run of CB & Q Slumbercoaches were placed as the front revenue car for this same reason.
Regarding the ex - GN Steam Generator car, several were purchased by WP to extend the range of the single F - Unit used on the remnant of the Exposition Flyer, before that train was replaced by RDC's. They were later used as protection for the CZ's elderly steam generators. One of these steam generator cars is currently @ Doyleland in Portland, OR. A look inside the end door reveals traces of Orange & Green paint !!! The exterior is painted Red / Orange / Black to match the 4449 Daylight.
