Just for clarification, WP converted three tenders from retired 4-8-2's to Water Tenders for use with single F3A units on the Royal Gorge before that train was converted to RDC's. Numbered 851-853, they provided additional water storage for the steam generator in the F-unit and did not contain steam generators themselves. They were finally sold for scrap in the 1960's.
Then in late 1968 WP purchased three Steam Generator Cars from Great Northern, eventually renumbering them 591-593. One each was used to supplement the F-units on the California Zephyr, or as the sole source of steam during the period when WP tried using a single U30B on the CZ.
