It took SP 177 days back in 1965 to throw the whole mess back together just to run trains at 10 mph. They never really "fixed" anything (except the bridges). I recall it took 7 to 8 hours to ride SP10 to Willits. Rebuild the line for 2 to 3 billion dollars and the first wet winter will likely have 200 to 300 million in repairs, delays, traffic diversions. Humboldt Bay would have to be reworked because the bar is not suitable for wide or deep draft ships. Chances are the loading facilities would be somewhere south of Eureka at Fields landing or King Salmon around the turning basin near the jetty. One would suspect any rebuilt railroad would avoid Scotia Bluff? There's a lot to consider here. It's going to be a while before anything happens. Although gold in any form does talk?
