CWR 46 was originally a tank engine for Washington lumber company. Business was booming for the Steam powered Super Skunk but engine 45 a 2-8-2 could only haul for 4 cars over the maximum grade. The idea was they wanted to add 3 more cars and surely the malley 2-6-6-2 could do it. CWR removed the tank and added a tender. Without the heavy tank over the drive wheels the engine slipped badly, plus consumed way more fuel. Although CWR bought an additional 3 coaches to hopefully have a 7 car the best she could pull was 5 without stalling out on the grade. With the additional higher fuel usage, she was deemed a failure and purged from the roster. I rode the first year of reactivated steam called the Super Skunk in 1965, which consisted of 4 Erie Lackawanna coaches with the 45 all painted up in red, vermillion and blue like a doll house. CWR purchased and rehabilitated 3 additional coaches from the SP Hairman cars for the 46 to add to the train. I rode behind the 46 in 1974 and she was a sweet-sounding engine pulling the 3 per cent grade out of Willits with those hair pin turns they have. The CWR was owned by Georgia Pacific so that's why GP sold the engine. As far as PSRM goes it was a steam engine so why not take it? Hope that helps.
