European steam - driving wheels

Does anyone know why the driving wheels of European steam engines are more delicate and light weight compared with the robust, beefy North American designs?

Wouldn't slender spokes be prone to developing cracks?

Quick acceleration is the first thing that comes to mind.

If I was one of those "bucket list" people, I think I'd go see German steam at least once.
