Santa Fe used tail end helpers on several W/B passenger trains up to the East Portal of Raton Pass tunnel. Northern Pacific did the same with both passenger & freight trains on the W/B run up to Bozeman Pass tunnel. In both examples the helper would cut off " On the Fly ".
