Re: Paging Carol Voss. We need an assessment of this VTA light rail extension dream

VTA overcommitted and in need of other things first?

VTA is fronting and promoting the funding for the BART extension into downtown SJ and Santa Clara. That should burn several decades of normal transit funding capability.

VTA needs to do something about the light rail trundle through downtown SJ, in pedestrian traffic, before they do any more significant extensions. They also need to get UP to abandon the whole Vasona branch (is there any freight business left on it, other than possibly one lumber yard, now that Permanente is shut down?) so the existing light rail line can be more extensively double-tracked, if they want to expand service to the southeast.

Somehow, I suspect that extending the existing line along Winchester into Los Gatos might play better (and cost several $billions less) than trying to resurrect the Peninsular or the old SP branch through Palo Alto.

Has the "influential person" priced construction of a rail bridge over a wide freeway, or extensive right of way acquisition alongside a near-freeway and through a park (with a bike trail) and through some major office complexes, in Silicon Valley, lately?

Still, it's a nice dream.
