The opposition to the Schellville tanker storage was spearheaded by a local resident named Norman Gilroy. He created a group calling themselves Mobilize Sonoma. You can google them. Mobilize Sonoma has zero experience in railroad operations but made "expert" proclamations about the safety of tanker storage. It claimed if one car in storage caught fire it would create a domino effect igniting every car. One hundred and sixty loaded cars would explode. An underground natural gas pipeline nearby could explode. Southern Sonoma valley would become an inferno. Untold deaths could occur. He used examples of derailments and unloading accidents to bolster his claims. What he didn't mention was the cars are sitting in storage, spot inspections are done by the FRA, the cars may be empty, they have vent relieve valves and examples like the tank car runaway in Canada don't apply . If huge chain reaction explosions occurred like the one he described LPG would not be shipped by rail. Why chance the "Ohio derailment" in beautiful wine country.
