Here's a photo I took on December 01, 1973, FIFTY YEARS AGO, of a Pacific Railroad Society excursion that ran from Los Angeles to Yermo, CA where we then rode some school buses and visited Calico Ghost Town, a nearby tourist attraction. This is one of my oldest photos in my slide collection as I didn't start taking photos with a decent 35mm camera much earlier than this. The train ran over the Santa Fe's then-Second District and used soon-to-be-abandoned right-of-way in Pasadena, shortly before a line-relocation moved the track into the center of the then-under-contruction Foothill Freeway (Interstate 210). The weather was lousy for the entire trip, with lots of rain. I remember hearing that we ran somewhere in the vicinity of 100 MPH near Oro Grande and Helendale. We had a stationary run-by between Daggett and Yermo, shown here. These were ex-SP F units, painted in Amtrak colors. A lot of changes have taken place since this photo was taken, including double-tracking at the location where this photo was taken.
