Good old 3270 series terminal. The computer itself was a mainframe at HQ or perhaps some other data center. Did the railroad use the green-screen, small-print 3278 version (132 char/line instead of 80)?

When I worked in SF for Caltrans, we had ITT 3278-equivalent, with 132/line on a yellow screen. They had dot-matrix, band, and daisy-wheel printers, with high-output lasers on the network in Sacramento. Later, they did a huge volume buy replacing all the ITTs with genuine (remanufactured) IBMs. One night somebody broke into the SF District office and stole a whole pallet of terminals that had been received late in the day and was sitting in a hallway near receiving. This was when IBM PCs were really hot products. Somebody saw IBM, probably, and thought "PCs!" Imagine their dismay when all they got was a bunch of terminals that required a mainframe connection to work...🙄
