I had the pleasure of a cab ride on this line back in the late 60's, about 20 miles each way from McNary east to a turn around, I think it was a loop. The track continued another 20 or so miles to the logging area to the southeast near Maverick Springs. Power for the day was ex-SMV #100 and was pulling a single car. The train was being run for some movie scouts looking for some good scenery other then the normal Sierra RR used in so many films. Unfortunaly, the WMSRR was in its last year or two of operation as track-owner Southwest Forest Industries was getting close to exhausting their woodlands timber and preparing to shut down the McNary Mills. The Hatch Brothers, owners of the WMSRR discovered the the Southern Pacific was preparing to file for abandonment for the upper end of the Napa Valley branch from St. Helena to Calistoga and made and attempt to acquire this +/-8 miles of trackage. Of course SP being possessed with liability paranoia was having none of any such "nonsense", and those who attended the ICC proceeding in San Francisco were coached by a PLA member to keep mum so as not to piss off SP royalty. So, the hearing went SP's way, request granted and A & K came and took the rails away in early 1970.
