Ol' Medfly Jerry Brown had a useful term: "appropriate technology." As applied here, there are are appropriate applications for all transportation modes. And there are obviously inappropriate ones. There are areas of overlap, such as short-haul flights vs HSR, or driving vs some form of mass transportation, where the outcome can go either way per-trip and viability is statistical. So leave off with the ridiculous comparisons. What we need is a transportation system that supports "appropriate" and multiple choices. Not just driving or airplanes.
