If anybody's interested in Siemens cars that are nearly 40 years old, but still in regular use, Sac RT might have some for sale soon. The original fleet from the 1980s is among the cars being replaced by these new cars. So Sac RT won't be as much of a trolley museum-in-regular-service any more.

The old cars have been more or less maintained and most are currently in use. Some have been refreshed in various ways over the years. Several of them have received electronic "chopper" motor controls replacing the original resistor banks. AFAIK, though, few got a full FTA mid-life refurb. Not much rust (it is, after all, California...), but the paint can be kind of beat up (lots of hot sun and many advertising wraps done and removed).

Wonder if Siemens is taking them in trade for the low-floors?

RT also has some original VTA cars, dating from the 1980s, by UTDC. Most of the bunch they got for scrap prices are in fact scrap-eligible, if they haven't already been cannibalized to keep the 3-4 usable ones (probably not without some work at this point) available. I think they've been stored since Covid started; they're really too big, can't be used on the Gold Line due to clearances, and are totally incompatible with the Siemens and CAF cars. But they worked for a brief time to get the Blue Line (Cosumnes College) extension going. Saw them a few times downtown; I think they have air brakes, which is unusual for modern light rail equipment especially on the West Coast.
