A posting on the Trains Magazine News Wire this week reported that Amtrak is looking into operating daily service on the Sunset Route, possibly as early as the Fall time change.
The change would involve making the existing Chicago-San Antonio "Texas Eagle" a through train to and from Los Angeles, connecting with a daily New Orleans-San Antonio daylight train that could include both Cross Country Cafe and Business Class service. Through New Orleans-L.A. coach and sleeper service could resume later.
The existing "Texas Eagle" includes a through Chicago-L.A. coach and sleeper three times a week, operating on the existing three-times-a-week "Sunset Limited" west of San Antonio. The N.O.-L.A. route has not seen regular daily passenger train service since the SP "Sunset" went tri-weekly in 1970.
Implementing the proposed service relies heavily on coordination and agreement with Union Pacific, whose "Sunset Route", particularly west of El Paso, is one of its busiest freight corridors.
