Well, he made it for the first 25 miles . . .

I don't know the date it was taken, but here's a photo by Craig Walker of train # 4, the "Southwest Chief" at Fullerton that includes me. I retired in July of 2016 so it was obviously taken prior to that. I was working as the Assistant Conductor and Les Langston was the Conductor. That's him on the right, partially obscured, holding the grab iron. When he first hired out on the railroad, he was employed by the S.P. in their water department. I guess that was a throw-back to the steam engine days. Santa Fe used to run tank cars back and forth from Newberry Springs to Amboy because Amboy didn't have a water source. They don't haul water anymore so I don't know how Amboy has solved their water situation.

But, I digress.

We called the police to have the guy on the left wearing the shorts be removed from the train for misconduct, but I can't remember the specifics. Over a thirty-plus year railroad career there are a lot of details you just forget. I should have kept better notes like my engineer, Richard Paseman, did.

On pages 327-329 of his memoir, "Night Train - Tales of the Railroad," he talks about a bomb scare at Fullerton and a guy who had to be removed from the train because he was hallucinating and had a gun.

Rich and I are both enjoying retirement very much!
