I’m guessing that we won’t see widespread adoption of hydrogen for rail. I’m reading tea leaves here, but I think main lines will be overhead electrified while terminals, sidings, etc. will not, instead using batteries with in-motion charging under the wire. This is a flexible solution with unlimited range and lower capital costs than full electrification of every last corner of the rail network, tho we won’t know the true costs of overhead electrification in California until Brightline West does it. Whatever happens, it’s all going to be electric and sooner than people think!
