Question about Bigboy excusion trips.

Whenever Bigboy is out and about there is always a diesel locomotive following behind the yellow-painted tenders. Is this diesel there for the purpose of PTC or dynamic braking or for emergency power in case Bigboy has a breakdown ? Or is it all of the above ?
