signals on the Union Pacific

I have seen a change in the signal aspects used where I live in Chico, CA. Signals are no longer showing the traditional color of red for an approaching train. Signals are now dark for the approaching trains freight or Amtrak even after the train has passed. Is this something new or has UP gone to a new type of control? Hopefully someone working for UP has an answer.
