I was about 13 and living in El Toro, CA, when these things made their initial runs up the Surf Line from Chula Vista in 1976. To this day, I have only vague memories of what I thought was some form of bullet train whizzing through my town. More than a decade later, at age 25, I moved from Idaho to New Jersey to join the staff at Railfan & Railroad, and not long after that I caught my first glimpses -- and pictures -- of Turboliners in service along the Hudson River. During acceleration and when holding track speed, they produced a sound unlike anything else on rails.
