Regarding the Black or red Stripes of Silver Pilot, each CB&Q enthsuiast probably has a preferred choice. For me the black stripes are best. They were original and lasted from delivery to the Burlington until sometime near 1960. Those looking for precise details should consult a Burlington Bulletin from the Burlington Route Historical Society, which focused on the history of the E-5. The black stripes evoke a feeling of understated 'classy', and oh how classy those Zephyrs were. Also the public system time tables had the black striped E-5 on the cover. This further ingrained the image of a black-striped E-5 as the definitive look of a Burlington E-5.
