The stampede for ARRA High Speed and Intercity Rail funds has created a cottage industry in newly minted "rail" consultants, or "planners" and "firms" now claiming rail expertise.

The quality of these experts was put to the test last month, in a meeting I was at, where a consultant from a leading national consulting firm was asked a question about differences in the California corridor he was making recommendations for and the NEC? He promptly told us, among other things, that the NEC was owned and dispatched by NJ Tranist, and had no freight operations.

It, of course, was untrue on all counts.
