Google has the Amtrak station nowhere near where any passenger stations have ever been. Prior to the new Amshacks the depots were located in the middle of the downtown core. I wonder how they got that point...
In all reality, the Elko "depot" is not staffed and is open essentially all day and all night. The Amtrak trains stop once a day in each direction, if they make it, with the conductors opening gates and letting people on and off the train. No baggage service of any kind. Westbound freights coming out of the yard will quite often stop at the depots...if the train comes out of the yard the conductor has to throw the various switches behind the train and then the crew shuttle brings them down to the Amtrak depot to get back on the head end.
A year or two ago Amtrak actually tore down the old Amshacks and built smaller versions in their place. Less room for the homeless to seek shelter.
