There are still some of us around that used the SP hospitals. There was a small one at the Sacramento General Shops capable of minor surgery. It was located beneath what is now a highway overcrossing near the RR museum. Shortly after being appointed chief draftsman at the shops in 1953, I was transported by ambulance from Sacramento to the San Francisco SP Hospital for a semi-emergency appendectomy. I remember the driver stopping just before getting on the Bay Bridge and asking "Is everything ok back there?" The ambulance transmission had a weird periodic click and I wondered if it was going to make the trip. Arriving by ambulance, I received very fast attention. The SP General Office at 65 Market Street employed at least one doctor full time in 1949. I remember getting my physical exam from a Dr. C. Horn--an easy name to remember.
