No pulp mill in Arcata. The closest there was to that kind of operation was an OSB plant in Korblex, right near where the A&MR/NWP interchange used to be. The #70 would tie up at this plant most days.
In the six years we lived in Arcata I never saw any pulp move by rail...in fact, service beyond the Sierra Pacific mill at Fairhaven was spotty at best. The tracks had a tendancy to wash out just north of the Samoa bridges, and those washouts would persist, sometimes for months on end, under L-P had some lumber loads to ship, then they'd dump some rock and restore service to Samoa.
After Louisiana-Pacific took over the pulp mill they did truck some loads over to the old Sprint reload facility in McCloud and ship it out on the McCloud Railway. This traffic amounted to over 40 cars a week at one point, but didn't last very long. The last of this traffic- 10 loads worth- moved in 2002.
