On T.O., the question was just asked: "What is the difference between a Shay and a Willamette?"
In my opinion, it's largely the valve motion, Stevenson on the Shay and Walschaert (with it's single eccentric) on the Willamette. This allowed for the Willamette to have all 3 valve chests facing out while 3 cylinder Shays had #1 cylinder facing the cab (or rear) and the #2 and #3 facing forward. Easily the most visible means of telling the two apart.
There were other significant differences...Willamette went with cast trucks and girder frames while these were extra cost options on a Shay.
