Good point...another improvement, if you will, from the Portland based firm. Running a
Shay, your knees were usually right up near the sheet metal separating you from the
#1 cylinder. As it frequently happened when a non-Superheated Shay worked water severely,
the water carried to this cylinder more often, resulting in blown cylinder heads and much
panic in the cab when this occured. Ray Boone of Clover Valley was firing Shay #3 when
this happened to him and Jimmy Baker of the Sierra Ry. had it happen with Shay #12, both
events involving the #1 cylinder. The Willamette gave the engineer a little more
protection from burns/injury in this regard.
