The situation would be different if the NWP were being subsidized by private money. Instead you have a well-connected elite that was able to tap the taxpayers for a dubious at best project. It would be different if the NWP didn't have a track record of decades of relentless decline.
Add to that SMART, which has been smitten with the doodlebug fad.(Check out the latest issue of "RAIL" magazine.) Not all of the controversy is due to anti-rail opinion; there is room for legitimate skepticism about both the NCRA-NWP and SMART game plans.
And then there is the anti-NIMBY bs. Power-brokers like the Press Democrat can kvetch about NIMBY's opposing SMART but they are totally NIMBY about the Rohnert Park casino. The latter is a billion dollar project which would employ 2,000. Everybody @#$%& about NIMBY's until it comes to their backyard.
