On September 17, 2009 my wife and I rode the steam-powered run from Alamosa to La Veta and back. Here are a few of the photos we took during the trip.
Ex-Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2-8-0 No. 18 put on quite a show in the Alamosa yard early in the morning as it assembled the consist for the run to La Veta.
The Rio Grande Scenic acquired several full-length domes from Holland America Cruise Lines for the trips to La Veta and for excursions to two other destinations they operate out of Alamosa.
View of the interior of our dome car as we were heading east to La Veta.
The last car on our train was former Southern Railway's open observation car "Lookout Mountain", which the Rio Grande Scenic also purchased from Mount Hood Railroad. This car provided superb views of the surrounding scenery and of the train. This photo was taken near Fort Garland as our train was heading to La Veta.
The east bound grade begins near Fort Garland, and reaches 2.5 percent near the summit of La Veta Pass. This photo was taken from "Lookout Mountain" just east of Fort Garland.
Our train entering one of two tunnels on the line.
During the 3 hour layover at La Veta the steam engine is turned on a wye for the trip back to Alamosa. This is our train at La Veta preparing to depart for Alamosa.
