Disconnects

In your Rand McNally "the road atlas", Pittsburgh & Vicinity, downstream (to the left / West) of downtown Pittsburgh, find Neville Island. Classic heavy industrial. There are many main and secondary tracks between Island Avenue and the Allegheny River; so apparently (broad-gauged) Pittsburgh Railways decided that the better part of valor was to truck in their cars and maintain them in Neville Road, in "perpetuity". Maybe a spare car was parked at the Downstream terminal.

I viewed the line while visiting the construction division offices of Dravo at the downstream end of the island, 1960s. Can't imagine the line not being covered in Pittsburgh Railways histories.

Sidelight: Dravo built river barges and towboats. Yes they were called towboats, but they always pushed their herd. Very early in WWII, it became obvious that many landing ships would be necessary to recapture Europe. Dravo got the job; knew the business, had access to plenty of labor ans steel, and were completely immune to attack. There was virtually no housing on the island. That streetcar line must have been quite a show.

For the historically inclined, the Dravo / Neville Island / LST history is available on bing and google.

For those with large vessel experience, imagine the delightful experience of operating a flat bottomed barge from New Orleans to Great Britain. No lights, protection?, and submarines.

Another disconnected streetcar line was the Queensboro Bridge between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The South-side, outboard roadway may be seen annually, during the New York marathon.

Boston has a barely connected rapid transit line to East Boston and the airport. The connection to the shops in Cambridge is via a the street trackage connection. All cars have poles.

===============================================================================================

There is one more disconnected streetcar line, this one still operating, on the East Coast. My memory is working on it.

A classmate gave me a must-visit-ASAP list of the East Coast lines.
