Your last sentence is the primary answer, in my memory. Also the San Joaquin Daylight eventually spawned the Sacramento Daylight between Lathrop and Sacramento. And, I believe a "fast" schedule through the Valley was never a prominent factor for these SP trains. One goal, too, was to keep the San Joaquin Daylight competitive with the Santa Fe, especially after 1938 when the streamlined lightweight Golden Gates entered service between the Bay Area and Bakersfield.
