April 1968, Lyndon Johnson was still president, hundreds of young men were dying each week in Viet Nam, Martin Luther King had been killed just days before, and Bobby Kennedy was running for president. With that as a backdrop, Southern Pacific was getting its long held wish to abandon trains #75 and #76, The Lark" as the last #75 was about to leave LAUPT for San Francisco.
SDP45 #3206, on the roster for less than a year, would lead with FP7 #6455(?) trailing. The men to the left are SP officials, no doubt pleased at their success in ending "The Bird That Couldn't Fly".
