During the last few weeks before the demise of the WP California Zephyr, I was privileged to ride in the cab from Portola to Gerlach. Entering the desert, which lacked grade crossings, the engineer aimed the Mars Light to the point of his best visibility and stopped it at that point, increasing his view of the track ahead.
